Michigan LDS Chapel Mass Shooting: What We Know About the Victims
Grand Blanc Township, MI September 28, 2025 Authorities have released the first details about the victims of Sunday’s mass shooting at a Latter-day Saints chapel in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. The attack, which left four people dead and eight others injured, unfolded during a late-morning worship service and has shaken the tight-knit congregation.
The Victims
Officials have not yet released all names publicly, pending notification of families, but community leaders and relatives have begun to identify those lost:
A longtime church leader, remembered for mentoring youth, was among those killed. Friends said he often described the chapel as his “second home.”
A young mother of two, who had recently moved to Michigan for work, was also fatally shot. “She wanted to raise her kids in a safe, loving community,” her sister told reporters.
Two other congregants, one elderly and another in his early 30s, died at the scene. Both were active volunteers within the ward.
The eight survivors range in age from late teens to their 70s. Several remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition.
A Community in Shock
Members of the congregation described chaos as the shooter opened fire inside the chapel. Survivors were ushered to safety by parishioners who barricaded doors and helped the injured.
“We were just singing hymns, and suddenly there was screaming and gunfire,” one survivor recalled. “It felt unreal.”
Local faith leaders from other denominations have joined in vigils, stressing unity and support for the LDS community.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities say the suspected gunman, who was taken down after an exchange with police, acted alone. Motive remains unclear, though investigators are examining digital evidence and speaking with acquaintances.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that the attack appeared targeted at the congregation but not at any specific individuals. Federal agencies are assisting local police in reviewing the shooter’s background.
Larger Context
The Michigan attack marks the latest in a series of deadly shootings at houses of worship across the United States, reviving concerns about security at churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples. Faith groups and security experts are once again urging congregations to review safety plans and train volunteers in emergency response.
What’s Next
Officials expect to release more details on the victims and the injured in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Grand Blanc Township community has begun raising funds for medical bills, funerals, and counseling services for survivors.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement: “We mourn deeply with the families and the LDS community tonight. No one should have to fear for their safety in a place of worship.”
